Fabergé Rediscovered
The nearly ninety objects by the Russian firm of Carl Fabergé today constitute a leading attraction at Hillwood, but Marjorie never considered them to be the most important part of her collection. Two highlights of this collection are the Catherine the Great Egg and the Twelve Monogram Egg. The pink Catherine the Great Egg, purchased in 1931 by her daughter Eleanor as a birthday present for Marjorie, was originally a gift from Tsar Nicholas II to his mother, Maria Fedorovna, in 1914. Dating to 1896, the Twelve Monogram Egg was a gift from Tsar Nicholas II to his mother after the death of his father, Alexander III.
